Tinnitus Hearing loss: Remedies for Tinnitus
Tinnitus is the perception of sound in the ear and is also known as "ringing in the ear." It can be perceived in one ear, both ears, or in the head and is usually described as a ringing noise. Some patients, however, report more of a high-pitched whining, buzzing, hissing, humming, or whistling sound. Tinnitus has also been described as a "whooshing" sound such the sound that wind or waves make. The sounds that tinnitus produce in the sufferer may come and go or it may be a continuous sound. When the ringing is constant, it can be annoying and distracting.
Approximately 36 million Americans suffer from this uncomfortable condition, and more than 7 million Americans are afflicted with tinnitus so severely that they cannot lead normal lives.

Causes of Tinnitus
Tinnitus itself is not a disease but a symptom resulting from a range of underlying causes including ear infections, foreign objects or wax in the ear, and injury to the ear. Tinnitus can also be a side effect of some oral medications such as aspirin and may also result from an abnormally low level of serotonin.
Most tinnitus comes from damage to the microscopic endings of the hearing nerve in the inner ear. The health of these nerve endings is important in acute hearing, and injury to them brings on hearing loss and tinnitus. In older adults, advancing age is often accompanied by a certain amount of hearing nerve impairment and tinnitus. In younger people, exposure to loud noises is probably the leading cause of tinnitus and often damages hearing as well. Tinnitus may also be caused by allergy, high or low blood pressure, a tumor, diabetes, thyroid problems, or head/neck injuries.
Tinnitus and TMD
Ringing in the ears is also one of the many symptoms of Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMD). Tinnitus associated with TMD is often misdiagnosed and then goes untreated or is treated ineffectively. A highly trained neuromuscular dentist may diagnose that the cause of your tinnitus is related to an unstable or misaligned bite. He or she can then work with you by stabilizing and realigning your bite so that your entire jaw works together without pain. When your bite is restored to its normal position, the ringing in your ears will be relieved.

Some of the most common symptoms of TMD are:
· Migraine-like headaches
· Facial pain
· Neck pain
· Shoulder pain
· Jaw pain
· Limited jaw movement
· Clicking or popping sounds in the jaw
· Sensitive and sore teeth
· Numbness in fingers and arms
You will often hear people speak about a TMJ problem. TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint, which is the jaw joint. These joints are small joints in front of each ear that attaché the lower jaw to the skull and are the most complex joints in your entire body. The area of the face where the temporomandibular joint is located is a complex network of bones including the teeth, muscles and nerves. Because of this inter-connection and complexity, TMJ conditions affect many areas of the body.
